Linear Welding & Fabrication: The Van Nuys Owner’s Guide
Linear gate parts that crack, snap, or pull out of alignment can usually be welded back stronger than the factory made them, without pulling the gate off its posts or hauling it across town. Installed welding and fabrication on Linear gate systems in Van Nuys typically runs $95 to $340 depending on what let go and how much steel needs attention. Most calls start with a gate that suddenly racks sideways or a bracket that sheared off and left the opener pushing against nothing.
We’ve been fixing Linear gates in Van Nuys since 2001, and the pattern is pretty consistent: a weld fails, the gate starts dragging, and the opener strains harder until the next weak point gives. You don’t need a whole new gate. You need the failed part cut out, a proper weld laid in, and a few minutes to check the alignment so it doesn’t happen again. That’s the work we do on site, in your driveway, with the gate still hanging where it belongs.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
We weld and fabricate for the full Linear gate operator range: the LDO series (LDO50, LDO33), the SL and SLD slide-gate operators, the APeX swing-arm units, the PB series pull-to-open arms, and the older GTO/Linear Pro models that merged into the Linear line years ago. The part that fails usually isn’t the motor or the board. It’s the steel around it: mount brackets, hinge tabs, fork clevises, gate frame corners, chain idler brackets, and the operator post base.
Here’s a gotcha most people don’t know: Linear uses several different bracket patterns across model generations, and a bracket from an LDO era unit will not always match the hole spacing on an APeX swing arm. We match by measurement, not by guessing at a model number. Take a photo of the label inside the operator cover before you call if you can. If the label’s gone, we measure the failed part against the unit it came off of. For OEM versus aftermarket, Linear’s own steel brackets are fine, but on heavy gates in Van Nuys heat, we often cut and weld a heavier-gauge replacement locally. The factory bracket might be 11-gauge; we’ll step it to 3/16-inch plate where a corner keeps cracking. You don’t need a part number for a weld repair. You need the gate in front of a welder who’s seen that exact failure before.
We’re an independent shop, not affiliated with Linear, and we also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls operators. But when your Linear gate’s steel is what gave out, the fix is fabrication, not a part-number scavenger hunt. The work comes with our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing, and Hal Gatewood’s name is on the invoice.
Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags and drags at the far end. This is usually a broken weld at a hinge tab or a frame corner letting go. The gate didn’t bend. The steel separated where the load concentrates. If we fix it now, it’s a weld. If it’s ignored, the gate pulls its hinge post out of the ground.
- The opener is pushing but the gate barely moves. A sheared bracket or cracked fork clevis means the opener’s force never actually reaches the gate leaf. The motor is working against a broken link, and every cycle is hammering the next joint.
- You hear a sharp pop or ping when the gate opens or closes. That’s not a warning shot. That’s a weld finishing the job of breaking. Once you hear it, the part is already separated, and the next few cycles will wallow out the mounting holes.
- The gate racks sideways or binds halfway through its travel. A broken lower hinge or wheel bracket lets the leaf twist, and the wheels stop riding their track. The gate still moves, which fools people, but the geometry is gone and the steel is wearing itself out fast.
- Rust streaks under a bracket or a fresh crack in the paint line. Van Nuys summer heat and the moisture that works into powder coat every winter makes hairline fatigue cracks show in a season. A rust trail means the crack goes all the way through. Once you see it, schedule the weld before it becomes a gate on the ground.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what Linear weld and fabrication work typically runs in Van Nuys:
| Repair Type | Typical Installed Range |
|---|---|
| Single bracket re-weld (hinge tab, mount flange, or operator bracket) | $95-$150 |
| Cracked gate frame corner or tube joint repair | $140-$220 |
| Full operator post base or chain idler bracket fabrication | $220-$340 |
| Gate re-alignment and stress check after welding | Included with any weld repair over $150 |
Every price is quoted and agreed before we strike an arc. No surprises at the door, no phone quote that changes when the truck shows up. The range depends on how much cutting and grinding the old damage needs and how much steel we have to replace. Parts are priced straight through, labor’s by the hour, and you’ll see both on the written estimate. Every weld carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not right, one call brings us back. And we still offer $40 off any repair over $200, no trip charge inside the county, and our standing 10% discount for seniors and veterans.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a section of this job that’s safe for an owner, and a section that isn’t. You can safely check: are the hinge bolts tight, is the gate level, does the opener bracket still have all its fasteners, and is there a visible crack you can photograph. What you should not do is weld a bracket while it’s still bolted to the operator, or try to grind out a crack on a gate under tension, or attempt a repair with the gate still bearing on its hinges.
A gate that has cracked steel is already carrying unbalanced load. Cut the wrong joint and the leaf can drop or swing on you. That’s a thousand pounds of steel moving against the last thing holding it. We roll up with a welder on the truck, do the fabrication on site, and test the gate through full cycles before we leave. Hal grew up off Sepulveda, he learned welding up at Los Angeles Valley College, and he’s been at this since 2001. Calling is free, and the estimate is free. FAQs
A properly repaired weld on a Linear gate bracket or corner typically lasts 10 to 15 years in Van Nuys, often longer than the original factory weld. We grind to clean steel, weld hot, and check the surrounding joints so the stress doesn’t just move to the next weak spot. In the Valley heat, the failures we see are almost always poor original welds or fatigue cracks, not fresh repairs failing.
Most Linear gate parts can be welded in place and put back into service the same day. Bracket cracks, hinge tab breaks, clevis failures, and frame corner separations are all weld-repairable. The part only gets replaced when the steel around the weld is too thin or rusted to hold, and at that point we’ll fabricate a heavier local replacement and weld it in. Call (951) 749-5734 and we’ll tell you which route your gate needs.
Most Linear weld repairs take 1 to 2 hours on site, including grinding prep, welding, cool-down, and a full cycle test of the gate and opener. Heavier fabrication, like rebuilding an operator post base, can run to a half-day. We work in your driveway, so you don’t lose a week waiting for a shop to get to it. The gate stays on its hinges the whole time, and we don’t leave until it cycles clean.
Our trucks carry the common hardware and steel stock for most Linear repairs: hinge tabs, heavy-gauge plate, channel, tube, and the fasteners that get replaced when old ones are rusted or stretched. If your repair is a stock bracket, we bring it. If it needs a heavier fabricated piece, we cut it on site from what’s on the truck. If there’s ever something unusual, the shop is local, not three states away.
