FAAC Welding & Fabrication: The Van Nuys Owner’s Guide

Which FAAC Models This Applies To

We weld and fabricate for the entire FAAC swing gate line: the 400 series (400, 402, 412), the 390 and 391 models that show up all over the Valley on mid-size residential gates, and the heavier 750, 760, and 770-series rams that run commercial and apartment gates along Van Nuys Boulevard and out toward the airport corridor. If your operator has a model number stamped on it, we can match the bracket. If the label is gone or faded, which happens after a few years of California sun, we’ll match by the gate’s weight, the arm geometry, and the mounting pattern.

Here’s a compatibility gotcha that catches a lot of Van Nuys owners: the 400 series and the 750 series use different bolt spacing on the gate bracket, and the brackets look similar enough that we’ve seen people force the wrong one on. It holds for a while, then it tears. The 750 bracket is longer, with holes spaced for the heavier stress load. If someone tells you all FAAC brackets are the same, they’re wrong. We’ve also seen aftermarket brackets that are stamped, not welded, and they fold under a heavy gate within a year. For FAAC specifically, we prefer welded OEM brackets, or a fabricator-made bracket that matches the OEM hole pattern exactly, which we can do right here in Van Nuys if the original is on backorder.

We service and install FAAC products but we aren’t affiliated with the company, which means we can tell you honestly whether an aftermarket equivalent is going to hold up or whether you should stay OEM. For most FAAC swing gates, we’ve found the OEM steel is worth the few extra dollars.

Signs Your FAAC Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

None of these are subtle, once you know what you’re looking at:

• The arm mount looks loose but the bolts won’t tighten. The bracket itself has cracked or torn away from the beam. Tightening pulls the crack wider, and the gate still rattles. That’s a weld repair, not a hardware fix.
• The gate scrapes the ground at the far end. One of the hinge welds, or more often the hinge post itself, has shifted. A gate sags in the hinge post, not in the middle, and that’s where we start.
• The operator runs but the gate barely moves. The ram is trying to push against a gate that’s binding on worn or broken hinge hardware, and the extra drag eventually burns out the motor. Fix the metal while the motor still runs and you save yourself a much bigger bill.
• You can see daylight through the hinge weld. If the crack opens when the gate swings, the weld has already failed. Each cycle grinds the crack wider until something tears, usually when the gate is halfway open and blocking the driveway.
• Orange rust streaks run down from the bracket or hinge. That’s moisture working through cracked paint and into stressed metal. In Van Nuys we don’t get much rain, but irrigation overspray and morning condensation are enough to eat a stressed weld over time.

Here’s the honest split. You can absolutely check your FAAC gate for the symptoms above: observe where the movement binds, look at the welds, snap a few pictures. If the issue is a loose bolt you can reach with a wrench, tighten it and watch whether the play disappears. What you should not do is attempt a weld repair on a gate leaf that’s under tension. A gate is a heavy, spring-loaded assembly, even when the operator is disengaged, and a bad weld on a load-bearing hinge can fail catastrophically while a person, a pet, or a car is in its path. That’s not fear-mongering, it’s a warning from someone who has had to redo other people’s driveway welds more times than he can count.
