Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Van Nuys Owner’s Guide

If your Elite keypad has gone dead, a row of buttons won’t respond, or your intercom sounds like it’s underwater, we stock and install Elite-compatible keypad and intercom repair parts for most Van Nuys homes, usually finishing the job in a single visit. Most repairs run between $185 and $420 installed, parts and labor included, with the exact number quoted and agreed on before we ever touch a screwdriver. The typical pattern we see in Van Nuys: the keypad works fine for years, then one day a column of numbers stops registering, or the intercom speaker crackles and dies while the gate itself still opens fine from a remote.

Call (951) 749-5734

That last part is the giveaway. If your gate motor still runs but the keypad or intercom won’t talk to it, the failure is almost always in the keypad itself, the wiring between the keypad and the control board, or the board’s receiver input. And all three are fixable. We’re an independent gate repair company in Van Nuys, not affiliated with Elite, but we service their equipment every week and keep the right repair parts on the truck.

Key takeaways:

  • Installed Elite keypad or intercom repair in Van Nuys typically runs $185-$420.
  • We stock Elite-compatible keypads, intercom modules, and wiring repair kits.
  • Most repairs are done in one visit, same day when you call early.
  • Every job carries the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing.
  • Price is quoted and agreed before work starts. No surprises at the door.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite has made a few distinct keypad and intercom lines over the years, and the trickiest part is matching the right part to the right series. The older Elite EK series keypads, with their metal faceplates and mechanical buttons, are still all over Van Nuys apartment buildings and commercial lots from the early 2000s. The newer Elite IK series uses membrane-style buttons and paired intercom modules that run on a different voltage than the old EK line. If you try to drop a new IK keypad onto an older EK control board, it won’t communicate, even if the plug looks almost right. That’s the compatibility gotcha we see people trip on most.

How to identify what you have: look at the inside of the keypad housing for a printed label. Elite puts the series letter and a model number there, usually something like EK-2X or IK-4Z. If the label is faded or gone, a photo of the keypad face and the control board gets us close enough to identify it at the shop or on the truck before we even roll out. As for OEM versus aftermarket, Elite OEM keypads are solid but priced high and sometimes harder to get quickly in the Van Nuys area. There are quality aftermarket options that match the voltage and wiring spec exactly, and we’ll be straight about which one makes sense for your gate. For most homeowners, the aftermarket equivalent does the job and saves fifty to a hundred bucks. For commercial gates with heavy daily traffic, OEM is usually the better call.

Signs Your Elite Keypad or Intercom Is Failing

  • One column or row of buttons stopped working. This is usually a cracked trace on the keypad’s internal circuit film. The whole keypad looks fine from the outside, but pressing “2,” “5,” and “8” does nothing while the other numbers work. It doesn’t heal itself. The keypad membrane needs replacing.
  • Keypad works intermittently or only when you press hard. Over time, Van Nuys heat and sun bake the rubber contact layer inside the keypad. Once the contacts stiffen, you get ghost presses or no presses at all. We see it constantly on gates that face west into the afternoon Valley sun.
  • Intercom audio is crackly, faint, or cuts out mid-call. The speaker cone inside the intercom module deteriorates in weather exposure. If the visitor side still hears you and you can’t hear them, or vice versa, one channel of the intercom amp has failed. It’s repairable, but swapping the module is faster and usually cheaper than chasing the failure.
  • Keypad beeps but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad is talking, but the signal isn’t reaching the control board. That’s a wiring problem, usually a corroded connection at the gate operator or a damaged wire run underground. We trace it, fix the break, and the keypad comes right back to life.
  • Water inside the keypad housing after rain. Van Nuys doesn’t get much rain, but when it does, a cracked housing or failed gasket lets moisture in and shorts the board. If you see condensation behind the keypad faceplate, don’t wait. One good overnight drizzle can finish the board off.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Van Nuys residential gates, an installed Elite-compatible keypad repair typically runs $185 to $320, parts and labor together. If we’re repairing or replacing an intercom module at the same time, expect $260 to $420. What drives the range: the keypad series, whether your wiring needs work, and whether we’re matching an OEM Elite part or a quality aftermarket equivalent. Both carry our warranty, but the OEM part usually adds cost without adding lifespan. California sun and heat are the real killer on these components, and neither version is immune.

Here’s what the price includes: the part, the labor, testing the gate through a full open-and-close cycle, and adjusting the entry code if you want it changed. More than that, it includes us standing behind the work. Hal Gatewood’s name is on the invoice, and the 90-Day Done Right Promise is in writing. If something acts up within 90 days, one call brings us back. No runaround, no re-quote. And the price you agree to before we start is the price on the bill. We don’t play the “discovered additional work” game at the door.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. There are things you can check safely in five minutes, and there are things that go sideways fast if you don’t do this every week. The keypad itself runs low voltage from the gate control board, so checking the wiring connections and looking for corrosion is safe for most anyone who can use a screwdriver. Kill power at the breaker first, open the keypad housing, and look for a loose terminal or a white crust on the connection points. If you find a loose wire, snug it and test. That fixes a surprising number of “dead keypad” calls over the phone.

Where DIY goes wrong: pulling a new wire run under a driveway, guessing at voltage matching between an old Elite EK and a new IK part, or cracking open a live control board when you’re not sure which terminal is which. The gate operator runs on line voltage, and the capacitor can hold a charge even after the breaker is off. If any of that sounds like more than you want to dig into on a Saturday, call us. Hal grew up off Sepulveda Boulevard and has been fixing gates in the Valley since 2001. He knows the Elite lines, and he’ll tell you if a repair is a fifteen-minute fix or a replacement job before you spend a dime. Call (951) 749-5734 and we’ll talk it through.
