DoorKing Welding & Fabrication: The Van Nuys Owner’s Guide
If you own a DoorKing gate operator in Van Nuys and the chassis, mounting plate, or hinge bracket has cracked, torn, or let go entirely, here’s the short version: we stock the common DoorKing weld-in components and can usually have the part rebuilt or replaced on site, often the same day, with most repairs landing between $225 and $575 installed. The bigger question is whether the steel failed on its own or got help from a sloppy prior install. In Van Nuys we see a lot of both. The giveaway symptom is almost always the same: the operator arm or gate leaf works fine for part of the cycle, then binds, clunks, or stops dead against a mount that’s no longer square.
Which DoorKing Models This Applies To
This covers the slide and swing operator families most common across the Valley: the DoorKing 9100, 9150, and 9300 slide operators, the 6002 and 6003 swing operators, and the older 1601 and 1602 barrier-gate chassis that are still in service on a lot of Van Nuys commercial lots and apartment gates. If you’ve got a 6100 or 6500 swing model, the weld points are different again, and that matters. DoorKing changes the mounting footprint and the arm geometry between series, which means a bracket that looks close is not always the bracket that fits. The fastest way to identify what you have is to open the operator cover and look at the printed label on the circuit board side wall. It lists the model and series. Failing that, measure the distance between the mounting bolt holes on the operator chassis plate and call us with that number. A quarter inch off means a cracked weld in six months.
As for parts: DoorKing sells the OEM weld plate and hinge kits, and the OEM steel is good. But we’ve also fabbed replacements in-house from thicker material after watching OEM angle brackets tear along the factory bend line. For most residential and light commercial operators, a local steel equivalent at the same or slightly heavier gauge is a straight upgrade, not a shortcut. The exception is the operator arm itself. If the arm is bent or the clevis eye is worn oval, we send it out or replace with OEM. That piece is factory-balanced and it’s not worth building one from scratch. Also, one thing worth knowing: Gatewood Fence & Gate is an independent service provider, not affiliated with DoorKing. We work on their equipment every week, but when you call us, you’re calling a local shop in Van Nuys, not a brand office.
Signs Your DoorKing Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate clunks or jerks mid-travel. The mount plate has twisted, usually from a hinge post that’s taken a hit or shifted in the soil. The arm is fighting a geometry that changed.
- The operator runs but the gate barely moves. The chassis is lifting off its bolts because the weld pads cracked at the base. The motor’s pushing against air instead of the rail.
- The gate stops in the same spot every cycle. A torn weld lets the arm flex and bind at exactly the same point. Smooth travel is the union of flat steel and tight bolts.
- A loud pop, then a sagging gate leaf. That’s usually the weld at the hinge post or operator frame giving way all at once. It’s loud because the steel was under constant load.
- The operator cover sits crooked. The mounting ears bent or broke, and the cover is now the only thing holding the guts semi-level. Open it sooner than later.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Van Nuys, expect to pay between $225 and $575 for most DoorKing weld and fabrication repairs, installed. A simple angle bracket crack that can be ground clean and re-welded runs at the low end. A twisted chassis mounting plate that requires removal, straightening, new pad welding, and re-bolting lands somewhere in the middle. A full operator frame rebuild, or an arm that has to be replaced with an OEM unit, pushes toward the top. You’ll see the number before we strike an arc. We quote the part, the labor, and the time, and that’s the price you pay, period. No trip charge inside the county. Senior and veteran discounts knock another 10% off.
Every weld job also carries the 90-Day Done Right Promise. If it fails at the weld or the mount, we come back and fix it. The promise is on the invoice, in writing, and it’s the only way I’d agree to put my name on somebody’s gate.
One more thing about Van Nuys specifically: the heat out here will eventually show you every bad weld and every warped plate. A gate that lives in direct sun from 10 to 4 hits 140 degrees in July. Steel expands. A part that was barely welded in the first place will tell you about it. That’s why we over-build instead of patch.
DIY or Call Us?
You can inspect the obvious stuff yourself. Pop the operator cover, look for rust trails running down from the welds, and run the gate once while you watch the arm. If the mount plate heaves or the arm twists, that’s your sign. What you shouldn’t do is fire up a MIG welder and start filling cracks. A DoorKing operator is under spring tension and electrical load, and the mount points sit next to powder-coated aluminum, plastic control boards, and in some models high-voltage capacitor housings. Heat from a bad weld will cook those parts fast. Plus, if you weld the arm to the chassis in the wrong plane, the gate will bind and strip the gearbox. You’ll spend more fixing that than the original problem cost.
This is the kind of repair that’s cheaper to get right the first time. And in Van Nuys, we’ll do it in your driveway. Call us at (951) 749-5734 and we’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s a weld job or something else entirely.
FAQs
Ten to fifteen years, assuming the gate itself isn’t hit by a car or the hinge post hasn’t shifted. After that, the original welds tend to develop hairline cracks. Some Van Nuys operators from the mid-2000s are still on their original mounts, and the ones that failed early usually failed because the concrete pad settled and put the whole frame in a bind.
Almost always, yes. We grind out the crack, chase it to both ends, and lay a full-penetration weld with the gate de-tensioned. The only time we replace instead of repair is when the steel is too thin to hold or the original part was under-spec to begin with. That’s not common with DoorKing.
Most single-point weld repairs take between one and two hours. A full operator frame rebuild might push three. We’ll give you a straight time estimate before we start, and if we find something else wrong while we’re in there, we’ll stop and call you before any additional work happens.
We stock the mount plates, hinge brackets, and arm-end clevises for the 9100, 9150, 6002, and 6003 lines on the truck, plus a range of stock we can cut and drill on site for custom fit-ups. If you’re running an older 1601 barrier gate, we’ll need to match the part first, and we’d rather do that before we show up.
If you’ve got a DoorKing gate that’s clunking, twisting, or tearing loose, don’t wait for it to drop on your driveway. Call us at (951) 749-5734 for an honest look and a price you can hold us to. If I’m not the one who comes out, you’ll still get the person whose name is on the shop, the truck, and the invoice. Just give me a call - that’s still my number on the truck.
