BFT Gate Motor & Opener in Van Nuys: What to Know First

BFT gate motor and opener repair in Van Nuys typically runs $180 to $680 depending on whether we’re replacing a capacitor, a control board, or the motor itself, and most jobs are finished the same visit. We’re an independent BFT service provider, not an authorized dealer, which means we stock the parts that actually fail instead of pushing full-unit swaps. If your BFT gate is stuck, sluggish, or beeping at you, call (951) 749-5734 and Hal or one of his guys will pick up. You won’t get a recording.

This page is for Van Nuys homeowners and property managers running BFT openers on swing or slide gates: folks with a Deimos or Phobos that won’t budge, an Aries that reverses for no reason, or a Rigel board that just died after a power surge. We’ve been working on these units since 2001, and we’ve seen every way they fail.

How BFT Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

  • BFT Deimos BT control board capacitor failure. This is the single most common BFT issue we see in Van Nuys, and it’s usually heat-related. The electrolytic capacitors on the Deimos board sit close to the transformer and bake in Valley summers. The gate starts by opening fine when it’s cool, then refuses to close in the afternoon. We replace the capacitor set with higher-temperature-rated components rather than selling you a whole new board for $400 when a $30 part fixes it.
  • Phobos series gearbox wear from ungreased limit cams. The Phobos uses a worm-drive gearbox, and the grease BFT used from the factory breaks down after about five to seven years of Van Nuys sun exposure. When the limit cams get sticky, the gate over-travels and slams the end stops. We open the gearbox, clean the cams, re-grease with a high-temp lithium complex, and reset the limits. Takes about an hour on most residential models.
  • Rigel and Aries photocell misalignment after gate sag. BFT photocells are sensitive to beam interruption, and when a swing gate sags even half an inch at the hinge post, the beam gets clipped and the gate reverses mid-cycle. The fix isn’t always the photocell itself. We check the hinge post first, weld or shim it back square, then align the optics. Fix the post and you fix the symptom. Skip the post and you’ll be calling us again next season.
  • Aries AC motor capacitor going soft. These single-phase motors use a start capacitor, and when it degrades the gate hums but can’t get moving. Homeowners assume the motor is shot. Most of the time we test the capacitor, find it’s at half its rated microfarads, swap in a new one, and the motor runs another five years. We always test before we recommend replacement. That’s the whole job: test, don’t guess.
  • Water intrusion through the bottom cable gland on older BFT units. BFT’s older swing operators have a cable entry at the bottom of the housing, and the rubber grommet shrinks over time. Van Nuys might not get much rain, but sprinkler overspray and morning dew wick right up into the board compartment. We re-seal the gland with silicone, replace any corroded terminals, and check the board for moisture damage before it becomes a dead unit.

Our BFT Gate Motor & Opener Process

  1. 1
You call, a person answers. No phone tree. We ask what the gate is doing, what brand it is, and whether it’s swing or slide. That tells us which parts to bring on the truck.
  2. 2
We show up in the window we gave you. Hal or one of his crew arrives, walks the gate through a full cycle, and tests the obvious first: capacitors, limit switches, photocells, and the board’s supply voltage.
  3. 3
We show you what’s wrong before we touch a dollar amount. You get the price upfront, agreed in writing before any work starts. No surprises on the invoice.
  4. 4
Parts decision, made honestly. If OEM BFT parts make sense and are available locally, we use them. If a quality aftermarket capacitor or gear set does the same job at half the cost, we tell you and let you choose. We don’t mark up parts to pad the bill.
  5. 5
The repair, tested hard. We run the gate through at least five full open-close cycles, check the force settings, and make sure the auto-close and safety reverse are doing their jobs.
  6. 6
Cleanup and the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. We leave the gate working, the area clean, and our guarantee on paper. If anything acts up within 90 days, one call brings us back.

What BFT Gate Motor & Opener Costs in Van Nuys

Here’s what we charge, plain and simple. These are the numbers we quote over the phone and the numbers on your invoice:

  • Capacitor replacement (Deimos, Aries, Rigel): $180 - $260
  • Control board repair (component-level, not board swap): $220 - $420
  • Control board replacement (new or refurbished): $380 - $680
  • Gearbox rebuild (Phobos, Aries): $300 - $520
  • Photocell replacement and alignment: $140 - $240
  • Full motor replacement (residential swing): $550 - $900
  • Battery backup install or replacement: $260 - $480

What moves the price: whether we’re repairing a board or replacing it, how old the unit is, and whether the gate itself needs welding to sit square. You’ll know the exact number before we turn a screwdriver. Estimates are free, and there’s no trip charge inside the county. If you’ve got a written estimate from another company, bring it to us for a free second opinion.

Why Van Nuys Homeowners Call Gatewood Fence & Gate for BFT Work

Hal Gatewood grew up off Sepulveda Boulevard, not far from the old Van Nuys Airport, and he never really left the neighborhood. He picked up welding and metal fabrication at Los Angeles Valley College over in Valley Glen, and he’s been fixing gates across the Valley since 2001. The name is on the shop, and the shop is down the road. That’s the oldest accountability there is.

Every BFT job we do comes with the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it’s not done right, we make it right. We answer the phone with a live person 24/7, and we don’t send a call center three states away. When we show up, the person who answers your phone is the same person who works on your gate. And if BFT ever leaves you stranded beyond saving, we also service LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, Ghost Controls, and DoorKing, so you’re never stuck with a dead gate and no options.
