Elite Welding & Fabrication: The Van Nuys Owner’s Guide

If you have an Elite gate with a cracked weld, a snapped hinge, or a bent post, we stock the parts to fix it and we weld on site in Van Nuys. Most Elite welding and fabrication repairs run $225 to $650 installed, and we can usually get to you same day or next morning. You’ll know the part failed when the gate starts dragging on the ground, binding mid-swing, or leaning like a drunk at closing time.

Elite builds a solid gate. But the San Fernando Valley sun, the Santa Ana winds, and years of cycle after cycle eventually find the weak spot. Usually it’s the weld at the hinge plate or the post base, not the gate panel itself. Hal Gatewood has seen enough of these to know the difference between a gate worth welding and a gate someone should have replaced in 2015.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite gate hardware shows up on a lot of properties in Van Nuys, from the ranch-style houses in Valley Glen to the bigger spreads up near Lake Balboa. The good news is Elite’s swing gate line has stayed fairly consistent over the years. If you have an Elite SL-3000, SL-5000, or any of their older single-swing models, the hinge brackets, post caps, and weld points we repair are nearly identical across the board.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Elite changed their hinge pin diameter on some 2018-and-newer models from 7/8 inch to 1 inch. If you buy a bracket for the older pin and try to hang it on a newer post, it will bind and shear the weld within a year. We carry both sizes on the truck and we measure before we weld. As for OEM versus aftermarket, Elite’s OEM hinge brackets are fine, but for the actual fabrication work, the metal matters more than the label. We use 11-gauge steel plate for post reinforcement, which outlasts the factory originals in our experience. In California weather, untreated mild steel will rust through in five to seven years near the coast, but inland Van Nuys gets less salt and more sun, so you’re realistically looking at ten to fifteen years out of a properly primed and painted weld.

One more thing: we are an independent shop. We’re not affiliated with Elite, but we’ve been repairing their gates since 2001 and we know their quirks better than the instruction manual does.

Signs Your Elite Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

  • The gate scrapes the driveway when it opens. This almost always means the hinge weld at the post has started to crack or stretch, letting the gate drop a quarter inch at the free end. It only gets worse as the weight keeps working on the crack.
  • The gate shudders or jerks mid-swing. That’s usually a bent hinge pin or a weld that’s cracked partway through but hasn’t let go yet. The gate is binding against itself and the motor is fighting it.
  • You see rust bleeding from the hinge plate or post base. Rust under a weld is a structural problem, not a cosmetic one. It means water has gotten between the metal and it’s eating the connection from the inside.
  • The gate leans toward the latch post at rest. A sag in the hinge post, not the middle of the gate, causes this. We fix the post, then we fix the weld, because fixing only the weld means you’ll fix it twice.
  • The gate won’t close fully or it closes on its own. That’s the hinge geometry changing as a weld stretches out. The gate is telling you exactly where it’s failing if you know what to look at.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Van Nuys, expect to pay between $225 for a single cracked weld repair and $650 for full hinge replacement with post reinforcement and new brackets. The spread comes down to how much of the original metal is still sound. A simple re-weld on one hinge is fast. Replacing both hinge brackets, reinforcing the post with steel plate, and re-hanging the gate takes more time and more material.

Every quote we give includes the parts, the labor, the grinding and prep work, and a coat of rust-resistant primer and paint to match your existing gate as close as we can get it. You’ll know the price before we strike an arc, and that price does not change when the job is done. The 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the weld and the installation in writing. If it’s not right, we come back and make it right, no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check the hardware yourself. Wiggle the gate while it’s closed. Look at the hinge plates with a flashlight. If you see cracks, flaking rust, or a gap between the bracket and the post, that’s your answer. Don’t weld it yourself unless you are a trained welder with the right equipment. A gate panel under tension can shift while you’re working on it, and a bad weld on a 400-pound gate is not a scratch-and-dent problem, it’s a hospital problem.

What we do in Van Nuys is weld on site so your gate never leaves the property. We bring the welder, the grinder, the steel, and everything else. You bring the failed part and we’ll turn it back into a working gate. If you’d rather us take a look first, call (951) 749-5734 and we’ll send somebody who knows what they’re looking at.
