• The gate leans toward the post when it’s fully open. Worn hinges let the gate tilt inward at the extreme end of travel. That tilt stresses the post, and a stressed post is a much bigger job than a hinge set.
• You can lift the gate leaf and feel vertical play. Grab the free end and lift. If there’s any upward movement, the hinge pins are done. A healthy gate has zero vertical slop.
