Elite Access Control Installation: The Van Nuys Owner’s Guide

Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite has made several access control generations over the years, and the part that fits a 2008 Elite SL3000 won’t necessarily talk to a 2020 Elite SW4200. The compatibility gotcha nobody mentions: Elite changed its wiring harness pinouts around 2015, so a keypad that worked on the older brown controller board may not wire straight into the newer green board without a jumper change. We’ve cleaned up more than a few installs where somebody bolted on a “universal” keypad and fried the control board because the pinout didn’t match.

Here’s how to figure out what you have: open the control box and look for the model label on the board itself, not on the gate arm. The board number is what matters. If the sticker is faded, measure the keypad cutout. Elite keypads come in two common faceplate sizes: the older 3.5 x 5.5 inch single-gang style and the newer 4 x 6 inch surface-mount. For OEM versus aftermarket, we’re straight with people: genuine Elite boards carry the factory warranty and match the harness without jumping pins, but a quality aftermarket like a DoorKing or Linear keypad often costs 30 percent less and lasts just as long in Van Nuys sun, provided it’s wired correctly. Signs Your Elite Access Control Installation Is Failing

• Keypad beeps but gate won’t move. That’s usually a dead relay on the access control board or a broken wire between the keypad and the operator. The keypad thinks it’s doing its job; the signal just never arrives.
• Gate opens for everyone, no code needed. A short across the request-to-exit loop will trick the operator into thinking someone pressed the exit wand. We see this after rain in Van Nuys, when water gets into a cracked keypad housing.
• Card reader flashes red and rejects every card. In nine out of ten cases the reader itself has failed, not the cards. The older Elite readers had unsealed seams, and years of Valley heat plus morning marine layer moisture do them in.
• Telephone entry system rings but the gate won’t buzz open. The tone decoder inside the unit has drifted out of spec. It’s a fifteen-dollar part on some models, but Elite dealers will quote you a whole new board. We swap the part.
• Remote range dropped to ten feet. The receiver antenna on the access control board corrodes over time, especially on south-facing gates in Van Nuys that bake all afternoon. A new receiver module usually restores the range.

DIY or Call Us?

If your Elite access control failure is just a dead battery in a wireless keypad, swap the battery and save the service call. If the keypad lights up but the gate ignores it, you can check the obvious: make sure the keypad wiring at the operator terminals hasn’t jiggled loose. Beyond that, I’d say leave the control board alone. Any access control installation involves low-voltage wiring and, in some configurations, a connection to mains voltage inside the operator cabinet. A homeowner who misidentifies a 24VAC terminal as a 24VDC terminal can cook a $400 Elite board in about two seconds. We’ve had to replace boards that died from exactly that.
