Ghost Controls Hinge & Roller Replacement: The Van Nuys Owner’s Guide

Ghost Controls hinge and roller replacement in Van Nuys typically runs $145-$290 installed, and we keep the most common Ghost Controls-compatible parts on the truck for same-day swaps. Most owners don’t discover the hinge or roller failed until the gate starts dragging on the driveway, groaning mid-swing, or binding at the latch post. You’ll usually hear it before you see it: a low creak that sounds like the gate is asking for help every time the opener kicks on.

What we see most often in Van Nuys is the bottom roller wearing flat on one side. The gate still opens, so people ignore it, but the flat spot makes the opener work harder every cycle until the mother board gives out or the hinge post starts leaning. That’s a $90 part turning into a $600 repair because nobody caught it early.

Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Ghost Controls uses a fairly consistent roller and hinge spec across their residential swing and slide gate opener lineups, but there’s a compatibility gotcha you should know about. The newer ATS & AXR Series (the ones with the curved remote housing) use a different roller axle diameter than the older ABBT and pre-2016 GTHW models. If you order the older-style roller for a newer gate, it’ll bolt on and look right for about three weeks, then the bearing will start screaming because it’s not seating correctly in the track.

That’s the kind of thing we check before quoting. Hal Gatewood’s crew carries both axle sizes on the truck, along with adjustable gate hinges that match the Ghost Controls offset pattern, so we don’t have to guess at the supply house. We’d rather spend ten minutes measuring than forty minutes making the wrong part fit and leaving you a wobble. If the gate is off an older Ghost Controls unit and you’re not certain which series it is, the model sticker is usually inside the opener chassis, driver’s side.

We also service and stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and DoorKing, but this page is about Ghost Controls hardware, so let’s stay on that.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing

  • Flat spot on the bottom roller. The roller stops rolling and starts sliding, and the gate drags a polished line across your concrete. The fix is the roller itself, not the concrete, and definitely not the opener.
  • Gate sags at the latch end. Hinges stretch over time, especially the top hinge on a double gate. The gate still swings, but the latch misses the post and the opener slams it harder every time. Replace the hinge set and the sag goes away.
  • Loud creak at the hinge, not the post. If the sound comes from the hinge pin, the bushing is worn out. Spraying it with WD-40 quiets it for a day and then it comes back louder. The bushing doesn’t heal itself.
  • Opener stalling mid-cycle. Ghost Controls openers have an obstruction detection feature, but it can’t tell an obstruction from a wheel that’s gone square. If the gate reverses for no reason, the rollers are one of the first things we check.
  • Visible gap between hinge and post. If you can see daylight between the hinge plate and the post it’s bolted to, the post is either flexing or the hinge bolts are working loose. On a Ghost Controls gate, the hinge plate is the weak link by design, because the opener torque loads it more than the gate weight does.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Installed, a single Ghost Controls-compatible roller runs $45-$75, and a full hinge set for one gate panel runs $100-$215, depending on the series and whether we’re doing the post as well. The total bill for a typical Van Nuys hinge and roller replacement lands between $145 and $290, parts and labor included. We’ll tell you the price before we touch the gate, and that’s the price you pay.

Every Ghost Controls hinge and roller replacement includes the correct axle size, fresh hardware, and a real adjustment pass on the opener travel limits so the gate doesn’t get torqued out of square again. The 90-Day Done Right Promise applies to parts and labor. If the gate starts sagging or groaning again inside 90 days, Hal comes back and makes it right, no runaround.

DIY or Call Us?

Replacing a roller or a hinge is not the dangerous part of gate repair. The dangerous part is what you don’t know you don’t know: the opener has a torque setting that will twist a fresh hinge if it’s not adjusted, and the gate panel weighs more than it looks. You can safely check the roller for flat spots and test for loose hinge bolts with a wrench. That’s worth doing.

But if the hinge post is leaning at all, or the gate has sagged enough that the latch doesn’t line up, you’re not fixing that with a socket set. You’re fixing it with a welder or a post reset, and both of those are a one-trip job for us. Call (951) 749-5734 and we’ll tell you honestly if it’s a half-hour swap or if the post needs work before a hinge will stay true. That call is free.
