• You can see daylight moving between the hinge plate and the post. Rust has been working behind the weld, and now the plate is peeling away from the post. Once you see motion, you have maybe a few weeks before the hinge lets go completely.
• The gate makes a rhythmic creak or click when it moves. A creak means metal on metal with no lubrication left, and in Van Nuys sun and heat, grease dries fast. If the creak turns into a click, the pin is hammering inside the barrel and ovaling it out.
