Linear Access Control Installation: The Van Nuys Owner’s Guide

If you’ve got a Linear gate system and the access control has stopped responding, we stock the parts and do the install right here in Van Nuys. A full Linear access control replacement typically runs $450-$950 installed, depending on whether we’re swapping just the controller board or the whole keypad-and-receiver setup. The usual story we hear: the remote works one day, then takes three or four presses, then nothing but a clicking relay and a gate that won’t budge. Or the keypad lights up but won’t accept a code the owner has been punching in for six years. That’s how these things fail in the Valley. Not with a bang. With a shrug.

Here’s the part most people don’t realize: Linear access control systems have been made under a few different ownership structures over the years, and the boards are not all interchangeable. The APeX series talks differently than the old AE-100 and AE-500 telephone entry units, and a keypad from a 2007 install won’t drop into a 2019 board without a communication protocol mismatch. That’s the single biggest reason DIY access control swaps go sideways in Van Nuys: the part looks right, bolts up right, and silently doesn’t talk. We’ll match it before we mount it. That’s the whole job.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear was hugely popular in Van Nuys gate installs through the 2000s and 2010s, so the model list matters. The main lines we see on service calls are:

  • Linear AE-100 / AE-500 / AE-1000: the old telephone entry units. Boxy, beige housing, metal keypad. These are getting long in the tooth, and the keypad membranes crack first, but the boards often outlive them two to one.
  • Linear APeX series (AP-5, AP-4, AP-3): the newer stuff. Color LCD on some models, and the board is far less forgiving of a wrong-voltage power supply.
  • Linear M3X / MCX keypads and receivers: the stuff typically wired to slide gates around Van Nuys apartment buildings and a lot of the commercial lots off Vanowen and Sepulveda.

Here’s a compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Linear changed the wiring pinout between the AE line and the APeX line. Not the wire colors. The pin positions on the terminal strip. If you match wire color to wire color and the board never powers up, that’s usually why. We’ve pulled more than one APeX board out of a housing in Van Nuys where somebody before us had gone color-by-color and cooked the board. It’s a ten-minute fix to set it right, but only if you catch it before the smoke.

On OEM versus aftermarket: for Linear specifically, we generally recommend the genuine Linear or Nortek board for the brain, and a quality aftermarket like Gemini or Camden for the heavy-duty keypads on the post side. The reason is simple. The aftermarket boards we’ve tested tend to be fine for a year or two, then fail on the RF side in direct sun. And Van Nuys gets direct sun. Eleven months of the year. The OEM boards hold up better against heat, and that’s been true across every series we’ve worked on since 2001.

We’re an independent service provider, by the way. Not affiliated with Linear or Nortek. We just fix their stuff every week, which is how we know what fails.

Signs Your Linear Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • The keypad accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move. This usually means the keypad is fine and the relay on the board has stopped firing. The relay is a mechanical part and it wears out, especially on heavy-use gates in Van Nuys apartment complexes that cycle a hundred times a day. We can replace the relay on most Linear boards rather than tossing the whole unit.
  • The remote works from ten feet but not from the street. The antenna or the receiver board has degraded, not the remote. In Linear systems, the receiver sensitivity drops gradually. We’ve tested this pattern on hundreds of gates around Van Nuys, and it’s almost never the remote. Don’t throw batteries at a board problem.
  • Codes stop working one at a time. Linear boards store codes on an EEPROM, and those memory chips do fail. If one tenant’s code dies, then another’s a week later, the board is losing its memory. It will keep losing codes until it’s replaced.
  • The display scrolls garbage or freezes. On APeX units especially, the display board can separate from the main board due to heat expansion, and Van Nuys summers do the rest. The fix is a re-seat and sometimes a ribbon cable replacement, not a whole new unit.
  • The whole unit pulses or resets when the gate motor kicks on. This is a voltage sag issue. In Van Nuys, older neighborhoods on the DWP grid have voltage that dips harder than the engineers at Linear ever expected, and the access control browns out every time the motor draws. The answer is usually a dedicated power supply or a capacitor kit.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Van Nuys, here’s what we see on the invoice for Linear access control work:

  • Controller board swap (AE-100 / AE-500 / APeX): $450-$750 installed, including the board, trim-out, and programming of all existing remotes and codes.
  • Keypad replacement (post-mounted, heavy-duty): $180-$350 installed, depending on whether we can reuse the existing wiring chase or if the Sun’s cooked the wire jacket and we’re pulling new.
  • Full access control replacement (board, keypad, antenna, programming): $750-$950 installed, with everything matched and tested before we leave.
  • Relay replacement on existing linear board: $125-$225, when the board itself is still solid.

You’ll get the price before we touch a screwdriver. If Hal finds the board can be fixed with a $30 relay instead of a $500 board, that’s what he’ll do, and that’s the number you’ll see. The price is quoted and agreed before any work starts. No exceptions, no surprises at the door. Every access control job carries the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if it’s not done right, we come back and make it right. And the install includes the programming of every remote and code on the property, not just the one that stopped working.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a version of this job a homeowner can do, and a version that will hurt them. If you’re comfortable with a multimeter and you’ve already got the panel open, you can safely check the power supply voltage coming into the board, confirm the transformer is putting out, and check that the wiring connections are snug. That’s all low voltage and safe to look at. What you should not do is attempt to swap a Linear board by matching wire colors, because the pinout difference across series will bite you. Low voltage doesn’t mean no damage. A mis-wired board will fry itself, and now you’ve bought the $500 board and the $750 install both.

If the gate motor itself is involved, or any spring or tension hardware is part of the job, that’s a hard stop. High-tension gate hardware is genuinely dangerous, and we’d rather you call than win the argument. Just give me a call, that’s still my number on the truck: (951) 749-5734. We’ll sort out what’s actually failed, and if it turns out the fix is cheap and you don’t need us, Hal will tell you that too.
